Downend Horticultural Society
Downend Horticultural Society Formed in 1943 as part of the "Dig for Victory" campaign to encourage people to grow fruit and vegetables for their families.
70 years later The Society is still a working Garden Club with talks and demonstrations on a wide range of subjects, to interest members and encourage them to improve and share their skills and growing tips, in a friendly atmosphere.
Two Shows are held each year The SPRING SHOW is a "members only" Show, a good showcase to welcome and brighten up the early Spring Days. Our SUMMER SHOW, held in August, is open to entries from all comers and is more competitive - who has the best beans/apples/tomatoes, the best floral arrangement or excels at Domestic and Handicraft work?
Outings We aim to run two outings per year - an evening outing in June to a garden of local interest and a full day trip around July time. Outings to wisley, Rosemoor, Aberglassney and West Woodhay House Garden Show are just a few of those enjoyed recently.
Where and When? The Society meets on the second Thursday of each Month at the Assembley Hall, Salisbury Road, Downend, Bristol BS16 5RA from 7.30 - 9 pm. Subs are only £17 per annum plus £1 per month covering Register and Refreshments. Visitors are always welcome for a 'taster' session at a cost of just £2, to come to the next meeting and enjoy our talk, before they decide to (hopefully) become a member.
