GFGS 6th Open Sweet Pea ShowThe Federations 6th Open Sweet Pea Show was held at Shurdington Social Centre in conjunction with the Cotswold Fuchsia & Pelargonium Societys Annual Show. Although entries were down, something to do with the weather apparently, once again the Sweet Pea Show was a riot of colour, this year it was judged by Mr George Alway from Bristol who has many years experience of growing and showing sweet peas. Back again after her success last year was Mrs Jenny Morgan from Abergavenny who had a successful day with a number of firsts and Best Vase in Show with vase of Gardeners Jubilee sweet peas, our congratulations to Jenny. Jenny received the David Brownjohn Memorial Trophy for 'Best vase in Show' from GFGS Chairman Dr Dennis Sutton
This was the first occasion that this new trophy in memory of the late David Brownjohn (GFGS General Secretary 1972 to 2006) has been presented. Jenny has since appeared on BBC Gardeners' World in episode 19 which (at time of writing) is still available on the BBC iPlayer and well worth watching. Our thanks to the Cheltenham Horticultural Society for the loan of bikini vases for the sweet pea show. As well as the sweet pea show the Cotswold Fuchsia & Pelargonium Society were also holding their Annual Show at the same venue, so two shows for the price of one!
Some quite spectacular fuchsias and pelargoniums were on show, so a difficult job for the judges. These shows would not take place without all those who take the trouble to exhibit, to the winners congratulations and to the runners up better luck next time. We must not forget all those unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make these shows a success, so we say a big thankyou to the Show Secretaries Colin & Rosemary Smith and all members of the Cotswold Fuchsia & Pelargonium Society for providing refreshments, running the raffle, tombola, plant sales etc. Images have kindly been supplied by Lewis Morgan, Syd Reed and Rod Wells.
