GSGS INSURANCE POLICY - NEW BENEFITS

Following queries from the AGM and subsequent talks with our insurance broker and insurance company the following changes are in place form July 25th 2008 at no extra cost to the members at this time.

Public Liability Insurance

Limit has been raised to £5M to meet requirements on schools or premises hired from local authority and other landlords.

Employers Liability for helpers /volunteers upto of £10 M - this is a new benefit.

Commercial / businesses will still be expected to have there own insurance cover. This has arisen from changes of interpretation of the law. This removes any potential gap in cover for volunteers who may be deemed to be employees even if no money is involved as well as providing cover for those groups that do have employees . Certificate of Employers Liability Insurance is held by the Treasurer, from whom copies can be obtained on request by providing an sae.

Cash and Assault Clause

It has not been possible to alter this section in any way as this is a standard clause issued by all insurers The Excess limit of Cash, Assault, and the age limit remain the same at 18 to 70yrs.

These changes bring our insurance cover up to to that offered by other schemes, but at much less cost: ours is nearly half the cost of our main competitor, and our trophy /Cup insurance is cheaper too as you only pay for what you require.

If any members wishes to join our scheme a pro rata rate can be arranged whenever your present insurance finishes to coincide with the GFGS start date of 1/4/09. There will be a slight increase in cost for next march anticipated to be about 15%.

Contact Mr S.G. Reed, at the address below, if you have any queries.

Public liability insurance is important for all clubs and societies.
It covers situations where, for example, someone is scalded by a hot cup of tea or slips on soil, compost or clippings that have fallen on the floor.
Without wishing to be alarmist, it may not be the member that claims against the club but it could be someone else who sues you in order to recover their costs, lost wages etc.
If the club does not have insurance, the club officers and committee members could find themselves personally liable.
Our advice is therefore to ensure that your club has adequate insurance and that it covers people as well as property.

If you are interested in taking out public liability insurance through the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies, please contact the Hon Treasurer: Mr. S.G. Reed, 19 Leyson Road, The Reddings, Cheltenham, Glos. GL51 6RU. Telephone: 01452 548478

The above is given as an example only. Please check the policy of any insurance to ascertain exactly what is covered and to ensure that you have the right amount and scope of cover
